Thinking outside the box

Thinking outside the box

One minute to go, just a one goal lead and the opponents are pushing to change the score before the referee blows his whistle. Now is the time to focus on the target and to fight as a team. My name is Alexandr Mazitov, I am 29 years old and I love these situations while playing soccer. And they are very similar to the situations I experience in my role as Team Leader Reporting Accounting at Bayer in Russia.

As a team leader I’m also responsible for a team and its success off the pitch. But in my job, I am dealing with contracts, payments and big numbers instead of kicking soccer balls. Currently I am on a short-term assignment in Leverkusen, supporting the Global Process Owner Cost Accounting in Logistic & Accounting integration projects. And I’m very happy that Bayer offers me opportunities to contribute to interesting projects so that I can gain more experience. The implementation of Vistex®, for example, is one of the projects I’m currently working on. With this new software tool, Bayer’s leaders are able to utilize brand-new control and steering functions when managing contracts with customers.

Always a team player

Calm, focused and consistent – these are qualities you need to have to be a good team player in soccer. I’m sure those attributes also help me to do a good job in such projects as Vistex®. Of course, a certain amount of curiosity and pragmatism is useful too if you want to pursue a career within the Bayer Accounting Community – but I’m sure it pays off.

My job is highly varied and very interesting – it never gets boring. And Bayer is a company with great products and which offers me fantastic opportunities in my personal career development. From 2009 until 2011, following my studies in Accounting, Analysis and Audit at Moscow University, I worked as a General Ledger Accountant at Bayer in Moscow. While I was still at university I enjoyed the field of accounting, and so I looked for an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a multinational company. Bayer gave me this opportunity.

After working for two years as Acting Deputy Chief Accountant, I was appointed Team Leader Reporting Accounting in 2014. And I always got the opportunity to work on global projects, such as a huge program for reorganizing the global accounting processes at Bayer, for instance. Meanwhile, I learned that thinking outside the box is key to seeing and overcoming new challenges.

Open minded, curious & courageous

After a hard day at work I Iove to relax by spending time with my family and friends. Sport is an important factor in my life, too. Besides soccer I also like to go cycling in my free time. And Bayer offers me the opportunity to keep relaxation and work in perfect balance. This helps me to continually learn new things and explore alternative methods in my job. At the same time, Bayer supports my professional development by offering various training programs and online seminars.

The main motivational factor is that Bayer provides a lot of opportunities to pursue your career in different areas of accounting as well as non-accouting (e.g. Finance, Controlling & Tax). This empowers you to contribute in creation of value added solutions.

My advice to new employees would be this: be open-minded, curious and courageous.
