Insights by a lawyer
My name is Edda Dolzer and I have been working as an in-house lawyer in the litigation department at Bayer AG since 2011. Our department provides strategic and legal advice for certain categories of legal disputes. Product liability cases in the United States are in the forefront of our daily activities. We are also engaged in international arbitration proceedings, for example.
Moreover, we provide litigation advice regarding ongoing projects and prepare internal decisions in case of legal disputes. Our cases often involve cross-border matters, and I am constantly in touch with in-house and external lawyers in different countries, in particular the U.S.
To clarify the facts, which is another important aspect of the job, I also work with employees from many different fields, such as medicine and IT. Working on legal disputes also requires coordination work, for example, if there are cases on a specific product pending in different countries we have to ensure an aligned defense strategy. In addition, it’s important to control the costs incurred due to the activities.
In short, the litigation department’s work is international in nature and has many facets. That is precisely what I like about Bayer as an employer. I also enjoy my job because it gives me an opportunity to immerse myself in different worlds, i.e. other legal systems and specialist areas. While I was at school and later when I was studying, I was able to gain experience in the United States. I have also worked in a large international law firm headquartered in the US. As an in-house lawyer, I can build on that experience and work on exciting legal cases that cross international borders.
