From “Open House” to training
Hello everybody, my name is Elena Probst, 21 years old, I live in Neuss and started my apprenticeship as a chemical laboratory assistant in August 2017. Since then I have been working for Bayer at the Wuppertal Elberfeld site. Let’s start all over again..
I graduated from high school with a high school diploma in chemistry and education. So I had already embarked on the scientific path, but the question still remained as to which career field was the right one. I came across the varied field of the chemical laboratory technician’s profession at Chempark Dormagen during the Training Day – an open day where you can gain insights into the various training occupations offered there – and so I started writing the applications. And what can I say – it worked!
How it all began…
On August 30, 2017 the training began and I still remember that I went to my training center with mixed feelings. The most frequent questions I asked myself were: What are the people I meet there like? Are they nerds? Is it the right profession for me at all? What does my working day look like?
The questions were answered very quickly. The people were very different and some were even more experienced in chemistry than usual – but in any case super friendly. And many – like me – didn’t necessarily come from Wuppertal. I immediately enjoyed my work because it’s not a typical office job, but exactly the right mix between paperwork (because of course you also have to document work steps) and interesting, practical work in the laboratory. All trainees spent the first four months in the training laboratory in order to learn the first steps and work processes that a chemical laboratory assistant needs. In addition, we should all be updated to the same level of performance. This was followed by the first on-site laboratories, i.e. work in the departments with new, friendly and more experienced colleagues. The process continued with important and interesting projects that could actually have an impact on people’s lives – because these are local laboratories that work on active substances for new drugs – and I was always learning new skills in the profession of chemical laboratory technician.
Diverse on the home straight
In between there are 6-week internships in the teaching laboratory every now and then during the training in order to learn the principles, syntheses and working methods and thus prepare us for the upcoming final examinations – since not all examination-relevant topics can be covered in the on-site laboratories, this is simply important. The working day in each suburb laboratory is very different and specifically geared to the area, so it is very instructive for the individual trainee. In order to bring us up to a technical level, we visit the vocational school in Wuppertal 1-2 times a week as a training group. Besides the lessons there is also a lively exchange of new experiences in the departments from trainee to trainee. As you can see, there is always a good flow of information and above all a cool relationship with his colleagues and superiors.
So, that was part of my experience in a nutshell. It is not possible to write down all impressions.
My advice to you
A hint from me, if you want to apply for a job at Bayer and are going to be in an interview, do not only present your knowledge, but also yourself as a person! Existing knowledge is not a priority, but your personality and whether you fit into the team.
