More than just an internship
My name is Nathalie and I started an internship in Recruiting at Bayer Strategy & Business Consulting (S&BC) in August 2019. It began with a well-planned week of onboarding and integration into the S&BC team.
For my first assignment, I was gradually entrusted with the area of recruiting events. This included being the first point of contact, staffing the events with our colleagues, working with them to plan the event format and materials, handling logistics, and of course making sure there were enough goodies for the event. ;-)
One of the highlights of this work was attending a trade fair in Rotterdam in November 2019. It was a great opportunity to experience an event from the perspective of my events colleagues and it will help me plan the details of future events even better. One of the nicest things for me about these events is that we can invite many of the participants to interview with us. Some of the people we’ve interviewed have even joined the company!
Candidate Management & individual projects
Along with event management, my assignments include candidate management and handling individual projects. Candidate management has given me valuable insight into such things as organizing and conducting our Recruiting Days events, communicating with candidates, and scheduling interviews. I also sat with interviewers as they conducted (phone) interviews. Tackling my own projects not only makes my internship special, it also gives me an opportunity to make an active contribution while developing both personally and professionally. For example, I planned a workshop here in Leverkusen to which we invited potential colleagues. Planning for this event included establishing the workshop content, staffing the event, finding and booking the location, handling catering, any consultations between colleagues, participants, and the site, and well as marketing the workshop. My personal highlights were being able to meet all the participants in person at the event and having the opportunity to moderate the workshop.
Strategy & Business Consulting Camp
Another special moment for me was the annual S&BC Camp held at the end of August. It gave me the opportunity to start getting to know many of my colleagues very quickly, which made me feel welcomed right away, as part of the S&BC family. I have found the S&BC culture to be very friendly, nonhierarchical (regardless of the organizational hierarchy – we address each other by our first names and everyone is open and approachable), international, and direct in a positive sense. Everyone feels welcome immediately. It’s impossible to cover in this short report all the things I’ve already experienced, but I’m so happy to have three more months in my internship, with so much more left to experience and so much personal and professional development ahead. Right now I’m writing my master’s thesis at S&BC, and I’m looking forward to the seeing the end results. On that note, I’d like to thank everyone for a wonderful internship!
